The Entrepreneur

An entrepreneur is a person who identifies an opportunity and brings together the elements required to start a business venture. The elements include finance, a business plan, the right product or service, and the right people. The Oxford dictionary defines entrepreneur as; a person who sets up a business or businesses, taking on financial risks in the hope of profit.
Having a successful business brings a lot of satisfaction and reward. It's important to understand that while starting a successful business requires people with good entrepreneur skills, an entrepreneur is not a jack of all trades and at certain points in the growth of the business he/she must accept that there are some areas of the business that require skills which the entrepreneur does not possess.
There is a well known book entitled The E-myth, by Michael E Gerber. In it he explains the importance of working on your business rather than working in it. This may seem an idealistic approach that only works for big corporations but the principle is a vital key to the success of any business.
Almost without exception, successful CEOs surround themselves with people who are great at what they do. They recruit or head hunt the best performers and employ them. Although the remuneration of top performers will be high, this will be more than compensated for with the results they will achieve for the business.
Listen to Simon Calver, the CEO of Mothercare, discuss the importance of employing the right people.
