Understanding MMP |
After many years of observing businesses, both large and small, I was always confounded over why the majority of them develop a culture of managing their organisation from the top down. The most successful way to run a business is from the bottom up. The latter approach is noticeable with start ups where at the beginning, the business surges as the decision makers are also working at the coal face and immediately identify the often discrete but vital market place trends. This enables them to quickly adapt to meet market requirements ahead of larger or more established organisations. I believe I have finally identified this process and call it the Major Minor Phenomenon (MMP). Essentially, this is the gradual move away from sound business principles over a period of time (un-intentioned) whereby the business owners begin to concentrate on the things that are of minor importance rather than things of major importance to success and growth.

Back to Basics |
Getting a business back to basics to re-invigorate it's performance and the enthusiasm of staff is recognised by experts as the answer to injecting new life and energy into the organisation that has been through hard times or even become a victim of MMP. In most cases, the business owner has lost their initial drive and have, frankly, left the running of the business to others to a large degree. This is when a third party becomes a crucial ally. A person who has little or no knowledge of an organisation's culture, systems and general operational effectiveness is the best person to conduct a health check of the business. A consultant can perform what is often referred to as a helicopter view of the various functions of the organisation. What has been thought of as a good way of doing things may no longer be current or able to meet the demands of an ever changing market place. It's human nature to just get comfortable. What may have worked well years or even months ago may now be completely out of tune with the dynamic market demands of today. A progressive business consultant will identify areas that need improvement and provide recommendations to re-vitalise the organisation improving turnover and profits based on an updated and significantly improved business model that will typically have at least a 12 month plan.
